Are you ever worried about oral cancer? Do you wish there was something you could do to identify this problem–or to avoid it altogether?
You’ve probably heard that oral cancer is extremely dangerous. Similarly, you probably know that a few habits–such as smoking–can leave you more vulnerable to this issue. However, did you know that oral cancer can technically be anywhere in your mouth or even on your lips, tongue, or cheeks.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to identify oral cancer. Often, oral cancer initially feels like a canker sore that doesn’t fade. Similarly, you may experience lumps anywhere in your mouth, including your gums and lips. White or red patches, unexplained bleeding from your mouth, bad breath, weight loss, and trouble speaking or chewing are common symptoms. Finally, you may experience a sore throat, pain in your ear, or a change in your voice.
Of course, we recommend visiting your dentist every six months for a routine cleaning. You see, most dentist will inspect your mouth for signs of oral cancer during these visits. Generally, our dentist will simply wear a glove and inspect your mouth, but may also use a dye test or specialized light.
Please note that not every abnormality will be cancerous. If something is discovered, our team at Smiles Dental will perform additional tests and give you specific advice.
